One of the primary challenges of our time is develop sustainable farming systems that can feed the world with minimal environmental impact. Some studies argue that organic farming systems are best because these have minimal impact on the environment and are positive for biodiversity. Others argue that no-tillage systems are better because such systems save energy and preserve soil structure and quality. A third group argues that conventional farming systems are best because yield per hectare is highest. However, so far, systematic comparisons of major arable production systems are rare and often it is difficult to compare the advantages and disadvantages of farming systems in a systematic way due to differences in soil/site characteristics and management....

Above- and belowground nitrogen distribution of a red clover-perennial ryegrass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient established by organic and conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Hammelehle, Andreas; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
Aims Belowground legume nitrogen (N) composed of roots and rhizodeposition is an important N input to soils, but published data of belowground N vary broadly, probably due to extrapolation from short-term experiments and dissimilar growing conditions. We quantified belowground N inputs of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) during two consecutive years in a clover-grass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient. Methods We established a red clover-perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) model sward in microplots located in field plots of the DOK experiment, which has a 33-year history of organic and conventional cropping, resulting in a soil nutrient availability gradient. Four treatments were examined: the zero fertilisation control, bio-organic...

Below ground nitrogen dynamics in the sequence clover-grass maize in the DOK long term experiment Organic Eprints
Mayer, Jochen; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Frossard, Emmanuel; Hammelehle, Andreas.
We investigated the effect of organic versus conventional cropping systems on the below ground nitrogen inputs of Trifolium pratense L., its transfer to corresponding grass and the fate in the soil organic matter in the clover-grass ley of the DOK long term experiment, Switzerland. BGN tended to be largest in conventional and organic treatments with standard fertilisation and decreased with lower fertilisation intensity. The largest amount of clover N transferred to grass was observed in the minerally fertilised conventional treatment. Clover N derived from rhizodeposition was rapidly stabilised in all treatments to clay rich fractions and thus clover N will have a relatively low direct N contribution to subsequent nonlegumes.

Effects of compost and digestate on environment and plant production – results of two research projects Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad; Kupper, Thomas.
A yearly amount of 9.3x106t compost and digestate derived from separately collected organic waste is produced in the 25 European Union member states. The improvement of soil properties is a major benefit of compost application. However, little is known about the occurrence of organic pollutants in compost. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts and digestates to influence soil fertility and plant health, one hundred products representative for the different composting systems and qualities available on the Swiss market were analyzed in two research projects. In the first study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ortho substituted and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, DL PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and...

Effects of digestate on the environment and on plant production - results of a research project Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Baier, Urs; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad.
Composts and digestates can influence soil fertility and plant health. These influences can be positive or negative, depending of the quality of the composts. A currently important question is to know, if digestates differ from composts in these aspects. A Swiss project is concerned with the estimation of the potential of Swiss composts and digestates to influence soil fertility and plant health positively. For this, one hundred composts and digestates representative of the different composting systems and qualities available on the Swiss market were analyzed. The organic matter and nutrient content of the composts varied greatly between the composts and the digestates; the materials of origin were the major factor influencing these values. The...

Einfluss unterschiedlicher Bewirtschaftungsverfahren auf P-Formen und P-Dynamik im Boden Organic Eprints
Keller, Martina; Oberson, Astrid; Frossard, Emmanuel; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen; Bünemann, Else K..
The impact of cropping systems on soil phosphorus (P) forms and P dynamics was studied. The systems were a biodynamic (DYN), a bioorganic (BIO), a conventional (CON), a stockless system (MIN) and an unfertilized control (NON). These cropping systems are part of the DOK field trial in Therwil near Basel. The systems differed in fertilization and plant protection. The P budgets over 30 years were negative except for CON and increased in the order: NON < DYN < ORG < MIN < CON. A sequential P extraction scheme was used to characterize the P forms in soil samples from 2007 and 1977 (before the start of the trial). Labile inorganic P (Pi) forms differed significantly between cropping systems. Organic P forms (Po) and stable Pi forms were not...

In the long-term DOK field trial at Therwil, Switzerland, agricultural farming systems are compared since 1978: CONFYM (mineral and organic fertilisers, synthetic pesticides), BIOORG (organic fertilisers, mechanical weeding and biological disease and pest control) and BIODYN (with composted manure and bio-dynamic preparations), all of them at two fertiliser intensities of 0.7 and 1.4 livestock units per ha, respectively. They are compared with CONMIN (conventionally managed, exclusively minerally fertilised) and NOFERT (unfertilised control). CONFYM and CONMIN were limed with 2.7 t CaCO3 ha-1 in 1999, CONMIN with additional 2 t CaCO3 ha-1 in 2005, since pH values had dropped below officially recommended values. In spring of 1998 and 2006 soil...

Einfluss von Kompost und Gärgut auf Pflanzenwachstum und –gesundheit: Potential und Grenzen Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Mayer, Jochen; Berner, Alfred.
One hundred Swiss composts and digestates were investigated in order to evaluate their influence on plant growth and health. Important differences in biological compost quality and on the impact on soil fertility and on plant health were observed. The most important limiting factor of compost quality is the possible immobilization of mineralized nitrogen by some composts. However, quality composts have a good potential to protect plants against diseases. More attention should be paid to the control of the composting process in order to improve the biological quality of composts with more beneficial effects on crops.

Einfluss von Komposten und Gärgut auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad.

Skinner, Colin; Krauss, Maike; Conen, Franz; Hansen, Sissel; Mayer, Jochen; Neftel, Albrecht; Mäder, Paul; Gattinger, Andreas.
Organic farming systems provide multiple environmental benefits. Concerning climate change they have a substantial mitigation potential. Skinner et al. (2014) evaluated with Meta-Analysis the global dataset on comparative field measurements of soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes under organic and non-organic agricultural management that have been published by the end of 2012. They showed that for arable land-use under organic management compared to non-organic 1) the cumulated area-scaled N2O emissions are about 15 % lower, 2) yield-scaled N2O emissions are slightly higher and 3) CH4 uptake is higher. However, this database is thin and further field measurements covering whole crop rotations are needed to close knowledge gaps. Therefore soil GHG fluxes are...

Ertrag von Mais und Sojabohnen im biologischen und konventionellen Anbausystem des DOK-Versuchs Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Fliessbach, Andreas; Niggli, Urs; Gunst, Lucie; Mayer, Jochen.
Sustainable food and feed production is becoming a major issue with regard to the growing world’s population and the scarcity of non-renewable resources such as energy and fertilizers. Long-term trials offer the unique opportunity to assess the performance of cropping systems over decades, providing meaningful data. While many studies have proven, that organic farming generally increases soil fertility and biodiversity, long-term productivity of organic systems is questioned. Here we show that across all crops of a seven year rotation, yields of the organic system were approx. 81% of those of the conventional system in the fifth rotation period of the DOK trial (2006-2012), but with much lower input of nutrients and pesticides. Two major food and feed...

Green manure and long-term fertilization effects on soil zinc and cadmium availability and uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at different growth stages Organic Eprints
Grüter, Roman; Costerousse, Benjamin; Bertoni, Angelina; Mayer, Jochen; Thonar, Cécile; Frossard, Emmanuel; Schulin, Rainer; Tandy, Susan.
Zinc (Zn) deficiency in human populations depending on cereals as a main source of Zn is a global malnutrition problem. In this field study, we investigated the potential of green manure application to increase soil Zn availability and wheat grain Zn concentrations (biofortification) on a Luvisol with different long-term fertilizer management. We also studied cadmium (Cd), as wheat is a major contributor of this undesired non-essential element to human diets. Clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), mustard (Sinapis alba L.) or no green manure was grown on field plots which had been managed with farmyard manure or mineral fertilizers for 65 years in Switzerland. After green manure incorporation into the soil, spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown on all...

Green manuring in organic vegetable production – first results Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin; Vieweger, Anja; Mäder, Paul; Total, René; Bauermeister, Regula; Baur, Robert; Suter, Daniel; Mayer, Jochen.
Green manuring is an important tool in organic vegetable growing by fixing nitrogen, recycling nutrients in the rotation, and maintaining soil fertility through adding organic matter. The aim of this project was to optimise the incorporation of different green manure mixtures and to optimise green manuring during winter after vegetable crops with a late harvest in autumn.
